Have you ever been referred to a periodontist by your general dentist? You may think, “Why do I need to see a periodontist for a dental problem?”
Periodontists are specialists that go to school an extra 3 years after dental school to have extensive training in treating problematic gum tissue and periodontal disease.
When your periodontal disease can no longer be improved or maintained by cleanings at your dental office, you will be referred to a periodontist. They are specialized in these situations and can offer different procedures that your general dental office may be can’t or aren’t aware of. They are mindful of the latest techniques and are trained for surgical processes to correct diseased tissue.
Hopefully you won’t ever have to deal with a specialist, but if you do, just know that you are being put in the hands of a doctor that knows how to help you in the best way possible. Please ask any questions so you are well informed as to what needs to happen.
And…try to maintain you regular dental cleaning appointments even if you do not have periodontal disease because after all, it really is about prevention!
