Here at Szmanda Dental Center, we are big believers that laughter is the best medicine – well maybe not if you’re experiencing a toothache…….but we got you if that happens too. *wink* Smiling and having that ‘glass half full’ attitude is where it’s at. It can really make the difference in the way your day will go. We’ve gathered some weird facts you never knew about your smile while you’re experiencing your next laughing fit. Laughter is known to improve immunity, reduce depression, anxiety and stress, cope better with pain, and increase self-esteem — so why not laugh? Here are 4 facts that maybe you never realized before:
1. It’s super catchy!
Have you ever gotten the case of the giggles before? You’re not quite sure how things aren’t even that funny anymore, but you just can’t stop laughing!? A lot of times this happens when you’re laughing with other people and it becomes an infectious frenzy. It’s a fun little domino effect and why it’s way more fun to hang around excitable people.
Great smiles are a big deal to people. It’s a quality that’s important when looking for a mate and quite often a favorite feature of those most attractive to you. It goes hand in hand with also having a good sense of humor. Why? Because we find it attractive!
In a review of more than 3,700 newspaper personal ads, Dr. Provine revealed that women were 62 percent more likely to mention laughter, including seeking a mate with a sense of humor, while men were more likely to offer humor in their ads.1
On the other end of the spectrum, relationships seem to last a lot longer if you’re consistently smiling and laughing with that person.
3. It’s helping yo fitness!
Ok ok….so it’s no run on the treadmill here, but just less than 15 minutes of laughing in a day can have you burning up to 40 calories! Think about it, if you’re heart rate is increased and you’re upping your oxygen intake while getting those endorphins flowing – you are burning off at least part of that bagel you had this morning and that is better than nothing my friend!
4. Laughs can be picky!
Did you know that your brain can find certain people funnier simply because you already familiarize them to be funny in your brain? It’s true! This is why the same joke can seem so much funnier if your best friend or your favorite comedian tells it, rather than someone you don’t know at all.
So keep smiling and laughing.
