Our mouths are set up in a perfect way to aid our bodies with digestion by using our saliva and some of these facts about spit may surprise you. Saliva may be gross to some people, but it’s an essential part of our lives for our food intake. Saliva helps to break down food so your tum tum has an easier time processing it. It also helps to break down food particles left in your mouth and washes them away.
Our mouths consist of 3 pairs of larger salivary glands and 100’s of smaller ones. This could be why we produce anywhere from ¾ of a liter to 1.5 liters of saliva everyday — that’s a lot of spit! But, we need it not only for softening up our food to get it into smaller pieces to swallow it, but it helps with taste, it protects the inside of your mouth while you chew and speak and helps keep your teeth and gums healthier by eliminating leftover food particles which helps reduce plaque buildup.
