The Dental Office Has a Smell — What?!

Dental-Office-SmellHonestly, the dental office has a smell?  This is a mystery to me since I’m in one every day and smell nothing.  But according to a lot of people, if we were to blindfold them and plop them in the dental chair like one of those Febreeze commercials, they would know exactly where they are.  So either my nose is broken or this is NOT a myth – HOWEVER we did some digging and there are some definite reasons why the aroma is as distinct as some people say!

Is a Sonicare Toothbrush Worth The Extra Money?

So we’ve had people ask what’s the big deal with these electric toothbrushes?  Is a Sonicare toothbrush worth the extra money especially when we’re handing you a toothbrush for free?  This is a valid question and one that will depend on your own personal skills.  To help gauge if your skills are reeeeeeeeally up to par, see if you pass this simple proper brushing checklist.

Proper Brushing Checklist:

• Do you brush for at least two minutes?  That’s right, two full minutes.  That’s 120 seconds!  Most adults do not even come close to brushing that long. It’s probably a lot longer than you think too!  Go ahead and take out your handy-dandy smart phone and time yourself next time.  Most electric toothbrushes are timed so you know just how long to keep brushing. Why Did My Teeth Cleaning Hurt?

Painful-teeth-cleaningHave you ever switched hygienists or waited awhile in between cleanings and noticed a big difference in the pain?  Did you leave the office feeling your teeth cleaning hurt too much or missing the good ol’ days when your hygienist was gentle?   Let us be the first to say we are not jabbing you with metal probes trying to make you bleed or cause you any unnecessary pain!

But the truth of the matter is, most of the time you are experiencing pain or tasting blood is due to your own poor oral health.  Ok ok – I know what you’re thinking.  We’re just pointing the finger at you, but let us explain!  Continue Reading…

Families are Welcome at Szmanda Dental Center

We cannot stress enough how grateful we are for the patients we have!  Our Wausau office on Grand Avenue has truly blossomed and our staff and patients have undoubtedly connected!  It is undeniable that the majority of our new patients come from word of mouth — our patients sharing to friends and family of their good experiences at the dentist.  We recently acquired through our current and loyal patient Sara, a referral for an entire family!  The mother, Nicole, called and said that Sara had recommended Dr. Brie and our office because we are all so nice here — you can imagine how great that makes us feel!

29783_116068995094834_8383004_nNicole had been taking both her boys to another children’s dentist in town and was unhappy.   We immediately set up a comprehensive oral exam first with Dr. Brie. The boys were so sweet and did really well. They got to pick out of the prize bin and loved it. (Nicole and her two sons pictured right.) Continue Reading…

What are the Warning Signs of a Cavity?

warning-signs-of-a-cavityOne of the biggest mistakes we see (besides people never flossing – come on guys! haha) is that people think if nothing hurts in their mouth, than they’re just fine!

We are firm believers that care today is savings tomorrow.  The dental prevention skills you learn can really help you financially and physically in the long run.  The more you frequent the dentist, the earlier you can catch issues instead of waiting for the warning signs of a cavity on your own. Are There Any Bad Side Effects Of Whitening Toothpaste?

We’ve had patients ask us about whitening toothpaste and if there are any harmful side effects.  The quick answer is no – however, you may experience sensitivity which would qualify as a “bad side effect” and this will vary from person to person.

Side-Effects-Whitening-ToothpasteThe sensitivity will depend on how much enamel you have on your teeth.  As your enamel wears away on your teeth, the layer below will obviously become more unveiled.  This layer is called dentine which also acts as a helpful little shield from the nerve in each tooth.  Since we live in Wisconsin – let’s compare these layers to CHEESEContinue Reading…

Why Don’t We Go to the Dentist?

So, what do you feel is the most popular reason people don’t go see the dentist? Fear, right? Nope. According to a national survey done by Cigna, it’s COST as the #1 reason why we don’t go to the dentist, with fear trailing right behind.

Everything these days can be expensive, with healthcare right up near the top. The fact is that the more you procrastinate about seeing the dentist, the more it will end up costing you in the end when something like a toothache will force you to go in. If you keep things in check with at least yearly visits to the dentist, (although it’s best to come in every 6 months for a cleaning and check to make sure your chompers are in pristine shape), the better it will be for you in the long run. Why Do I Have to Wait at The Dentist?

why-do-i-have-to-wait-at-the-dentistWhy do I have to wait in my doctor’s waiting room past my appointment time? Why are they running behind? I think they forgot about me…. Let’s face it, we all hate waiting for things, especially for an appointment that we may not really want to be at anyway. Why do doctors run behind?

Being a dental assistant, I see what goes on behind the scenes of a dental office and circumstances that cause us to run late. I think it’s good for a patient to know that we aren’t keeping them waiting on purpose. It’s as frustrating to us as it is to them and we’d like to take a moment to maybe get a little understanding as to why this happens. Continue Reading…

Penny and Sparrow

Penny-And-SparrowIt may feel a little disjointed that a Dental Office would be writing a blog post about a band — but that’s just how passionate we are about their music.  Penny and Sparrow consists of the dynamic duo of Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke.  Their musical roots started in Texas where they were once roommates and I’d like to think it’s then they both realized they loved PBR, making magic on the guitar and singing sweet sweet harmonies.

Their chill sound made it’s way up here to Wisconsin where we instantly fell in love with our ears.  We have since been playing their albums in every operatory making your dental experience even more enjoyable at Szmanda Dental.  When we heard that they would be performing a concert in Wisconsin, we jumped on the opportunity and some of our staff were able to get a front row seat to some of the best live music they have ever heard.  Penny and Sparrow

But wait, there’s more!

They’re nice guys too!!  They were beyond personable, funny — even go on tour with their adorable wives!  We are confident one day their music will be jamming on the radio and thought the least we could do is help them get even a little more exposure on their way. And in case our patients were ever wondering what that great song was playing while they were getting their teeth cleaned but were too shy to ask, well now you know!

Here’s a small clip of their music during the concert – please check the rest out on their website and purchase their music on iTunes.

Also — if Penny and Sparrow just so happen to read this, please put out an acoustic album of your music!  Oh..and come back to Wisconsin soon!
