Why is Saliva Important Anyway?

Saliva may be made mostly of water, but there are other helpful substances in there that really go to work in keeping your mouth functioning properly.  Normally, the body makes up to 2 to 4 pints of saliva a day!  Some people suffer from dry mouth, which is not only uncomfortable, but is a welcome wagon for germs and bad breath.  We can help those people with special recommendations and medication suggestions to get their saliva back on Team Oral Health.  Keep in mind chewing foods (we recommend sugarless gum) is the most efficient way to stimulate salivary flow and most people create the most saliva in the late afternoon.

The Dental Office Has a Smell — What?!

Dental-Office-SmellHonestly, the dental office has a smell?  This is a mystery to me since I’m in one every day and smell nothing.  But according to a lot of people, if we were to blindfold them and plop them in the dental chair like one of those Febreeze commercials, they would know exactly where they are.  So either my nose is broken or this is NOT a myth – HOWEVER we did some digging and there are some definite reasons why the aroma is as distinct as some people say!

Is a Sonicare Toothbrush Worth The Extra Money?

So we’ve had people ask what’s the big deal with these electric toothbrushes?  Is a Sonicare toothbrush worth the extra money especially when we’re handing you a toothbrush for free?  This is a valid question and one that will depend on your own personal skills.  To help gauge if your skills are reeeeeeeeally up to par, see if you pass this simple proper brushing checklist.

Proper Brushing Checklist:

• Do you brush for at least two minutes?  That’s right, two full minutes.  That’s 120 seconds!  Most adults do not even come close to brushing that long. It’s probably a lot longer than you think too!  Go ahead and take out your handy-dandy smart phone and time yourself next time.  Most electric toothbrushes are timed so you know just how long to keep brushing. The 411 on Dental X-rays

We often get asked about why we take X-rays or encounter people worried due to the radiation risk.  Let us reassure you why we take them.  X-rays are a necessary part of good patient care.  Since we can see only about one-third of the actual tooth, X-rays provide valuable information that we cannot visualize otherwise.  I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t feel comfortable if your dentist had a blindfold on, now would you?  To help put it in perspective as to WHY dental X-rays are so important: Continue Reading…

Social Media in the Dental Office

Social-Media-DentalAt this point it’s probably safe to say the majority of us have some form of social media flowing in our lives, if not have multiple accounts we can check by a press of a button.  We’re living in the age of the NOW where we can even ask our phones a question and *blink* there’s the answer!  I’m willing to even bet your grandma has a Facebook account #WoahNana!

It’s no surprise that technology gets more advanced year after year and in the dental world we have embraced it!  It has helped us connect with our patients on a more personal level and express who we are more effectively to prospective patients.  Word of mouth is by far the #1 reason why people choose us and then straight to the Google machine they go to learn more!  Social media has helped us get honest feedback with reviews and even schedule you more conveniently.  When you consider that one day in time people thought the only cure for a toothache was to kiss a donkey, I’d say we’ve come a long ways!  There are still some practices that don’t make social media in the dental office a priority and we think that’s bologna!

How to Avoid Dental Scams

There is no question that trusting your dentist puts you in a very vulnerable state and we want to help you avoid dental scams.  The issues you acquire in your mouth, in addition to the treatment used to fix those problems, are areas of expertise you know nothing about as the patient.  That is a big part of our job, making sure we educate you on your dental needs and build a trust in us that you can rely on.  You need to remember that even though a practice may have all the required degrees and qualifications, it does not mean they are trustworthy.  We have seen time and time again unethical dental actions that have been taken elsewhere.  There is a solid percentage of new patients that come to Szmanda Dental because they were taken advantage of and need a 2nd opinion.  Let us clarify — we are not writing this blog to bad mouth these other dental offices, but instead help patients learn of how to be aware of these scams and hopefully save them time, money and discomfort.
